CALZE

This is an Italian word for shoemaker. Also described hose or stockings, usually made from wollen cloth, but also silk. Worn with some form of harder footwear e.g. botte,scarpe, or stivali were often worn over the calze. When the calze was the only leg wear a piece of leather or felted wool was attached to the sole of the foot.
