CHOPINES

These were raised shoes on platform shoes worn by courtesans in Florence during the 15th and 16th century. The shoes became so far from the ground (24") the lady required to walk with assistance of stick or companion. Popular in Renaissance Itay and worn in Spain and England. Possibly of eastern origin. The Venetian designs of wood were referred to as zoccolo (zocoli).
